Rhinoplasty (Nose Job or Nose Reshaping)
The nose is an important organ in terms of respiration but also for appearance since it is located in the middle of the face. Nose surgeries are one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries. Operations regarding the nose should be well-planned and executed in every aspect. During cosmetic nose surgeries, it is possible to reduce the size of the nose, remove or lower the nasal hump, change the nose tip’s shape, open the airways, reduce or increase the size of nostrils, and change the angle between the upper lip and the nose. Since the needs of patients differ, the operations vary accordingly.
Which type of anesthesia is used during cosmetic nose surgeries?
These surgeries are performed in a hospital and under general anesthesia, which means that the patient is completely asleep during the operation.
How long do these surgeries take?
These surgeries usually take 2-3 hours; however, this varies from patient to patient.
“Open” or “closed” rhinoplasty? Which one do I need?
Depending on the state of the patient, the surgery can be performed either with incisions made outside (open rhinoplasty) or inside (closed rhinoplasty) of the nose.
What is piezo (ultrasonic) rhinoplasty?
One of the most important parts of cosmetic nose surgeries is the reshaping of the bones. In traditional rhinoplasty, a variety of surgical tools are used to execute this procedure. However, in piezo rhinoplasty, the bones in the nose can be reshaped delicately and orderly without destabilizing them. Since the cartilage and the blood vessels in the soft tissues are not harmed during piezo rhinoplasty, the patient experiences fewer postoperative bruises compared to traditional rhinoplasty. In addition, patient comfort is better, and the tissues heal faster. Piezo creates a more natural postoperative appearance in comparison with traditional methods. The number of complications and need for revision surgeries decrease significantly as well.
What are the age restrictions for rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can be performed on women over 17 and men over 18.
How long is the hospitalization after the surgery?
The patient can be discharged in the afternoon if the operation is performed in the morning; or the next morning if the surgery is performed in the afternoon.
Are internal splints and external casts used after nose surgeries? If so for how long?
Usually, silicone splints with air canals are placed in the nose after cosmetic nose surgeries. To protect the nose from impacts and conserve its shape, a thermoplastic splint is used. Silicone and thermoplastic splints are removed after about a week.
